Instead of playing their instruments at their local football stadium, Union band members were marching in the biggest parade of the year, 1,026 miles away.

People all across the U.S listened to a little bit of Green Country in the Big Apple.

The Union's high school band performed in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade this morning.

Also in the spotlight, a Union drum major, Megan Harju.

It was an incredible experience.

Megan was recognized for the essay she wrote that was entered into the Bob Hope essay contest.

“The attributes that Bob Hope exemplifies throughout his life were musicianship, leadership, community service, and a sense of humor. They're all things I'm passion about as well.”

She tells me even though she was singled out in the parade, her band deserved just as much of the attention.

"I really had to focus because not only was I representing myself but it was my whole band because we had all worked so hard to get there," Harju said.

"Every morning at 8 a.m. we would go out to the field and either practice for our show that we did or practice marching practice music. Learning how to do turns."

She also took home a $5,000 scholarship and $5,000 for her school's band.

Even though she and her band mates couldn't be home for Thanksgiving, most of the families went to them.

"When I heard that we would be going to the Thanksgiving parade I was like 'Awe man I won't be able to spend it with my family,' but now I'm here with my mom my dad and my brother and I'll be able to share Thanksgiving just as normal and so will everybody else here."

While they enjoy their turkey in New York City, band members will be back in Oklahoma on Friday.
