The Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office and the Oklahoma Insurance Department teamed up Saturday night to catch uninsured drivers and take them off Oklahoma roads.
The OID reports one in four drivers are not properly insured and that is why the state’s auto insurance is the third highest in the country.
Deputies made a checkpoint on Saturday night starting just after 7:00 to pull over every drive coming off Highway 44 onto West Skelly and check for his or her insurance.
If they did not have it they could face a fine of up to $250 and have his or her vehicle towed. Within the first hour at least a dozen cars were towed away.
The checkpoint was not paid for by tax dollars. It was funded by penalties from uninsured driver. The goal is to remove the uninsured drivers from the road.
