Tulsa police arrested the aunt of two children killed in an apartment fire on child neglect charges.
Police arrested 23-year old Miashah Moses for child neglect. They said the children's mother was at work at the time of the fire and Moses, their aunt, was watching them. The fire started on Monday afternoon at the London Square Apartments near 61st and Lewis.
They said Moses left 4-year old Noni Moses and 18-month old Nylah Moses alone for 8-10 minutes on Monday afternoon. They said something was cooking in the oven.
The Tulsa Fire Department said the fire was an accident caused by cooking.
Police said Miashah Moses tried to get back into the apartment after the fire started, but had locked the door and she and neighbors had to break the door down. The flames kept them from getting to the children. Those neighbors were injured in the fire.
Fire officials told FOX23 News that about 20 people were waiting to get back into their apartments. The fire destroyed one apartment and several others were damaged by smoke and water.
Carolyn Thomas was looking off her balcony when she saw the flames take over the front of the apartments.
"At first, I saw the smoke coming out of the building and we had a fire before, so I knew something was going on," Thomas said.
Thomas told FOX23 News she quickly learned this fire was serious. "There was a woman lying on the ground bent over crying. We wanted to know (if) was she in the fire or not," Thomas said.
Thomas told FOX23 things changed when everyone learned there were children inside the burning apartment.
Officials said two others were injured in the fire, not 3 as originally reported.
