Several airmen completed one of their biggest missions.

They have planned their approach, talked about it; some have even lived it in their mind.

"It's kind of surreal. It's been a long time since I've been home," said Dillon Pollard.

Six months of separation has been broken down by the day, and for those just learning to count by the hour. The time apart has been filled with anxiety, anticipation, and nerves.

"Just relief, a lot of relief; worry and worry," said Amber Gaston.

Gaston just got her father back.

"Until you've been there, you can't describe how good it feels to be on U.S. soil," said Michael Morgan.

All of the troops have spent time in Afghanistan. They make up the nearly 50 members of the 219th Engineering Installation Squadron.

"I'm back for good," said Pollard.

The news makes Dillon Pollard's mom smile. It's a gift she'll enjoy long after Mother's Day has passed.

"I'm proud of him. I'm just glad he's home safe and sound," said Pollard's mother.

Dillon told FOX23 that he'll continue working with the Air National Guard, but he'll be stationed in Tulsa.

"I'm just overwhelmed, really. It's so exciting," said Pollard's mother.

Everyone here has sacrificed, but none had to make or accept the ultimate sacrifice.
