Tulsa police have released the name of a man who died after opening fire on a Tulsa police officer on Thursday morning.

Police say Davano Pouncil died from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Police say Pouncil opened fire on a police car, shooting out a tire before running to a neighborhood.

Police searched the area around 14th and Garnett. A helicopter was circling the scene. Officers blocked off a square mile between 14th and 21st street to search.

Officers say they felt threatened by the man and opened fire at the same time, the man turned his own gun on himself. A medical examiner will determine who fired the fatal shot.

TPD tells FOX23 they are waiting on the autopsy results to determine that.

Neighbors say they were startled by the gunshots.

"6:20 is when the two gun shots happened," Ryder Jackson, who jumped out of bed to see what was going on.

Jackson told FOX23 that man was slumped over and curled up in a fetal position next to his fence.

"He had a gunshot wound about right here,” Jackson said as he pointed to his head. “You could see it really good."

Jackson’s neighbor saw it all happened. He didn’t want to speak on camera but told FOX23 he saw the gunman reach for something before officers shot at him.

"Three minutes after this I heard two gun shots probably three to five seconds apart," said one neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous.

"You don't put it pass someone to come running down your street but to actually get shot and killed on your street is a little different."

"It was pretty crazy,” said Jackson.  “I've never seen anything like that."

Police have placed Sgt. Eric Sokoloski and Officer Shayne Thomas on administrative leave pending the medical examiner's report.

Shanon, if you who worked with him knew he was having trouble like that why didn't you all come to his aid? I always try to help co-workers whether or not they are friends, at least offer to lend them money, feed them, let them live in my garage, whatever....unfortunately all of us don't know him the way you did, to us he is just another dumb punk who died because he was trying to take what belonged to someone else, not uncommon these days.

D was a former co-worker and friend, a guy who fell on hard times and did something both desperate and stupid. He was not a thug, low-life, scum, gang banger, or any of the other nasty names people keep calling him. He was just a guy who made a very bad series of choices. If you really read all of the different accounts of the incident, he never actually tried to hurt anyone. He shot the ceiling in the doughnut shop, he shot at a police car, he fired into the air. I don't know why exactly he chose to commit the robbery, why he ran, fired his gun, or ended it by shooting himself... but he didn't deserve that.

Davano was a dear friend of mine and I would really like to thank you for being much more respectful than other local media. He was a person that made a mistake that, sadly ended his life.

That's darn efficient. He's gonna shoot himself so just expedite the situation and shoot him anyway. To protect and to serve (donuts)

If you guys think this is bad, wait untill they do open carry. It is going to be the old wild wild west again. And you watch the criminials will blend in nicely with everybody else so you wont be able to tell who's who. A very good law only if it had a good outcome!!

It's good to see that they are carpooling. It's good that they could cause a pimpLe to pop itself. One less blemish in our society.
