School Residency laws are Unconstitutional! if parents and communities had equitable access to high quality and safe schools in their neighborhood you would not have to worry about school residency laws with such extremeness! This law is so unconstitutional on every level! 1. REAL school choice is not available to a vast majority of school districts and many parents are forced to stay in schools that are unsafe and unable to meet the educational needs of children. 2. What about Homeless families ( The Mckinney Vento act that is suppose to protect the educational rights of homeless children) is so misinterpreted, divorced families... there are so many scenarios that school residency are not that cut and dry! In this news article parents were asked, by school district staff, to SHOW them their child's bedroom and belongings to PROVE they live in the district! You kidding me! How about parents show up at the many educators home OUTSIDE of the school districts where many teach and are Principals and administrators and ask them to show US your track record of running an effective classroom & schools district...notice I did not say credentials because having lots of degrees don't equate to effective teaching and leadership... its a combination of skills/traits! Again, parents WE MUST Protect our children because if we don't who will??

Hek to the no I am not letting anyone in my home.....I do not care if they have proper id or not!! They have no right to physically intrude on my home, lil lone see my childs bedroom and belongings. That is why they are provided with proof of address, residency, ss#'s, etc. We as parents and us citizens have got to stand up for our personal rights and not allow people, i do not care who they are, to oppress them or exuse them.

If the govt gave funding to parents so they could choose any school for their child (instead of the govt giving money directly to school districts, forcing parents to send their kids to the school located within arbitrary district lines), then it wouldn't matter where your child sleeps at night. And taxpayers wouldn't need to pay extra to have a grown man peep inside your daughter's bedroom.

It's the people that buy a house in a school district, with no intention of living in it, just so their kid can play sports, or get their education at a school. This is why these checks are necessary. Just because you have a utility bill, or other type of proof, doesn't mean people actually live there. Anyone can buy a house and turn the water/electric on and receive bills in the mail. The only other alternative...pay for private schooling.

I agree their has to be a better way. I my opinion this should be a last resort and only if the students residency is suspect if the family has provided ample enough documentation to prove that they reside in the district then a residency check should not be required. I would think their are ways to determine if their is reasonable cause to suspect a student does not reside where they say they do.

Why does everyone think it is okay for a government official to search students homes and belongings? We have fought all the way to the United States Supreme Court to protect students from being searched at school, but now it is okay for the school to enter your home and your child's bedroom and look for their stuff? It is not necessary to search private property and belongings to ensure residency -- what it is, is against the law. Read the Fourth Amendment.

I am the person interviewed. I fully understand why they do the checks. However, we have provided proof of residency, which they accepted, more than once. I am not disagreeing with their policy, I just think there should be a better way of enforcing it.

I do not believe checks are done randomly, I think they are only done when a family can not prove their residency through other means such as a utility bill or a lease with their name on it. In preferred districts such as Union they can't just accept students who say they live somewhere but have no paper to prove it or I imagine they would be flooded with kids from out of district.

Checks are done to insure that the district is not spending money to educate children from other districts. So if you are worried about education cuts for teachers in your district you should want to make sure that every child that is packed in to your child's over crowded classroom should really be there. If the child does not live in the district that means they are not paying into that districts budget, therefor less money for the kids that should be there.
