A Tulsa man was caught trying to steal from the same man twice, and now James Shelton is behind bars.

FOX23 has learned Shelton tried to sale stolen cellphones back to the man he took them from.

Store owner Alex Fernandez had a feeling from the start.

"I looked up at the surveillance, and I  thought, 'Oh, that's the guy,'" he said.

Officers say 24 hours before, Shelton got away with more than a dozen stolen cellphones.

Those phones belonged to Fernandez. Police tell FOX23 Shelton stole them from Fernadez's other store

Fernandez walked into a Cricket Wireless store near Admiral Boulevard and Sheridan Road, showed the employee a gun and demanded cash. Then he made the employee take him to the back where he took the phones.

"We knew which ones were gone, so we relayed that message to all of our stores that these were blacklisted," Fernandez said.

Luis Cueto was the employee at the Cell Phone Hospital dealing with Shelton. Cueto played along with the deal, hoping to stall him.

"First thing I told him was, 'Hey, oh, you have a good phone, we want to buy it from you, but let me check it in the back real quick,'" Cueto told FOX23.

That's when Fernandez looked up the serial number. They knew they had a stolen phone, so they dialed 911.

"After a while he started getting nervous, really nervous," Cueto said. "Then he asked for his phone back."

So they let him go, but they already had a description of Shelton's car and the tag number.

Moments later, police arrested Shelton at the Wal-Mart just across the street.

"It was a team effort, most definitely my people did a good job," Fernandez said.

Police tell FOX23 Shelton admitted to everything, and when they searched his car, they found the stolen phones.

They also say Shelton's license plate has connected him to several other robberies.
