Sand Springs --

A Sand Springs man stabbed and killed a dog he says was attacking his neighbor.
It happened around 10:30 on Tuesday night off Long Street near highway 412.

FOX23spoke with the man who saved his neighbor’s life and he says it was a hard thing to do but it had to be done.

Larry Tessier says he was at home late with his mother on Tuesday night when he heard her let out a horrific scream.
“I looked out and saw my friend Jeremy Byrd standing there and he had a pit bull latched on to his forearm," says Tessier.

Larry says his neighbor’s arm was already chewed up pretty bad, and Larry’s first instinct was to grab the dog and try to save his friend.

“I grabbed the dog underneath the jaw and squeezed down until the dog released its jaws,” describes Larry.

At that point, he says his mother helped Jeremy into the house and tried to stop his bleeding. Meanwhile, the dog became even angrier.

“I yelled for my mom to get a knife and she came out with a whole handful of knives, and I told her to stab it in the lungs between the ribs," says Tessier.

His mom called 911 and Jeremy was taken to the hospital where he could have to have surgery for his injuries.
“I believe if that had been a small child that had been attacked, it could have easily been killed,” said Larry.

I tried to speak to the owner of the dog, but he wasn’t at home.
Right now, deputies are trying to get a hold of the owner, who has been cited once before for not keeping a dangerous animal contained. They placed a notice on his door asking him to contact them about this incident.

Larry says he feels bad because he doesn’t feel like the dog was given the love it needed.
“I don’t believe that all pit bulls are bad dogs, but any dog that isn’t given the proper love and care that it needs is going to be a mean dog," he says.

The dog is being tested for rabies.

This guy should be sued if he has been cited before for this dog, people need to take care of their dogs and secure them, I do, I spent several thousand dollars to make sure I had a fence to keep my dog inside, and she is a Rhodesian Ridgehound who doesn't bite, just big. I have a neighbor who allows his two or three pitbulls to run free, they threaten us when we go out to get into the car, bark and menace my dog, chase my old crippled up cat, and turn my garbage over and scatter it, several neighbors have called animal control and they haven't gotten here in time to get the dogs, one neighbor says he is going to poison them or shoot them if the guy doesn't either lock them up or animal control gets them soon, everyone is sick of putting up with them, I have a 3 year old granddaughter, if those dogs ever so much as nip her I am going after the owner, but I won't get the cops involved, I will take care of it myself.I have no respect for people who allow their dogs to run out, it endangers other people, property, and drivers who might have an accident trying to keep from hitting them, as well as the dogs themselves.

So are you saying the dog was not in the wrong? I should state the dog owner raised this dog to be an attack dog. It never had a chance to have a good life. When I opened my front the dog ran up on my porch and attacked my neighbor again. What would have been the outcome if my 2year old grandson was standing there with me when I opened my door?

Good for him, I am a dog lover but truly believe in people over dogs. My mom was bit by our pitbull/boxer mix trying to pull it off of our smaller dog. It literally took off her lip, luckily she got away but had to have a plastic surgeon repair the damage.Dogs can be scary no matter how well they are loved and taken care of just because they are so instinctual.
