Pop Up shops will return to the Deco District in downtown Tulsa this holiday season.
A group of Tulsa business owners, property managers and retailers have volunteered their time, resources and properties to create Pop Up Shopping, a seasonal retail shopping district offering a variety of gifts, including women’s clothing, men’s outdoor sporting goods, gifts from the Tulsa Zoo (including zoo memberships), books, calendars, candy, handmade gifts, handmade jewelry and more.
In 2011, the Pop Up Shops opened up eight retail shops during November and December which brought in over $100,000 in sales. Four of those eight became permanent businesses in the Deco District.
Libby Auld, President of the Downtown Deco District and owner of Elote Café & Catering, says the shopping district fills an important need.
“There is definitely a desire for more shopping and retail downtown,” Auld said. “Last year was a huge success and we ended up having four shops open permanent locations downtown. We have even more shops participating this year and it shows that downtown is ready for a retail district like this.”
The 2nd annual Pop Up Shopping will run from Nov. 28 through Dec. 28.
“Winter Wednesdays” will offer extended hours from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. or later and will include live music, free pedi cabs to Winterfest at the BOK Center and other downtown retailers, Santa photo opportunity and gift wrapping offered by local charities. Parents should bring their own cameras for Santa photos.
The shops are located inside four buildings in the area of Fifth to Seventh streets and Boston Avenue to Main Street. The hours on Tuesday and Thursdays are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
A grand opening event is set for Nov. 28 at 6 p.m. and includes live music by Mark Gibson Vintage Swing Movement, a Santa Clause bring-your-own-camera photo opportunity for families, carolers as well as area restaurants are open for dinner offering specials for shoppers.
Participating retailers for Pop Up Shopping include: Bison & Bear, Made, Candy Castle, Books are Fun and Theragenics. New retailers coming to the Pop Up Shopping District are: The Tulsa Zoo, Vestida Designs, Ellen J Gifts, Alter Ego Cupcakes, The Dog Dish, The Farm Holiday Boutique, Laser Z Studio, Tulsa Jewelry Collective, NU2U, Celebrating Home and Flash Flood Print Studios.
The Pop Up Shops are also looking for caroling groups for their Winter Wednesday promotions. For more information, contact Kathleen at email@example.com.
