KMOD reports that Phil Stone from The Morning Zoo and The Phil & Brent Show has passed away.
"I was informed just minutes ago that Phil Stone has passed away. Brent [Douglas] confirmed the news to me and I have few other details," said Don Cristi, KMOD Program Director.Just last month, the radio station announced that Phil & Brent's show, The Morning Zoo, was ending. The pair failed to reach a contract agreement with radio station owner, Clear Channel.
Phil Stone and Brent Douglas hosted the Morning Zoo for close to 27 years.
So many Tulsans were shocked by the news.
On Facebook, Lauri Bowman says, "This is so sad. My dear Dad loved the Zoo and I remember growing up with them and laughing out loud to Roy D. Mercer while driving into work every morning when I got older. My heart, thoughtful prayers and love to his family and friends. RIP Phil Stone!"
Friends of Stone say they'll remember his sense of humor. They say he was an avid musician who had just purchased his family ukeleles so they could learn to play together. He founded his band named after FOX23 anchor Chera Kimiko, the "Chera Kimiko Band."
Phil was an avid fisherman and a huge fan of the Arkansas Razorbacks. He loved the Andy Griffith SHow and the Waltons. He will always be remembered for his on-air antics with co-host Brent Douglas and their signature prank call character Roy D. Mercer.
Clear Channel Tulsa GM Don Christi said, "I can say this without any exaggeration or hyperbole, with apologies to Billy Parker and Scooter Seagraves, there is no single person who has had a bigger impact on Tulsa radio than Phil Stone."
The exact cause of Stone's death is unknown.
