Anti-abortion Oklahoma lawmakers continue to push for tighter restrictions on abortion.

Right now, the legislature is considering a bill that gives "personhood" status to embryos and requiring women seeking an abortion to first listen to the heartbeat of a fetus.

In protest of the personhood bill, Senator Constance Johnson introduced an amendment to the personhood bill declaring every sperm is sacred. Her amendment states: “Any action in which a man ejaculates or otherwise deposits semen anywhere but in a woman’s vagina shall be interpreted and construed as an action against an unborn child.”

The senator later voted with her colleagues to table the amendment and told the Guardian newspaper her amendment was to prove a point;

“As a woman and a 31-year veteran of the legislative process in Oklahoma, I am increasingly offended by state law trends that solely focus on the female's role in the reproductive process. With Oklahoma's new, never-before-experienced Republican majority, we are seeing enactment of more and more measures that adversely affect women and their rights to access safe medical procedures when making reproductive healthcare decisions.”

The personhood bill is currently being debated in the Health and Human Services committee.

Rhology - you are completely wrong about that. The ultra-right has always had a problem with individual eggs being stored and used for in-vitro fertilization. They believe that if the eggs are not ALL used for procreation, that the act of destroying the eggs is equivalent to murder. I have talked to many, many evangelicals that express this exact opinion.

31 years of legislative expierience,and. Makes a political stunt to have herself show that she doesn't take her job seriously,please,she has jeopardized her career to make a point by embarrassing the state of oklahoma to the world does not make a point,first of all there is absolutely no thought in what she is doing andwhat about the gay community, i personal think she needs to be removed from office,if she has nothing better to do by wasting tax payers money,to prove a personal point,and also by embarrassing the state that she represents shows she needs to be replaced with someone with integrity for the position in witch they where given to represent th people,what a disgraceful shame she is.

I get that this senator is trying to prove a point, but this is just stupid. I don't believe ANY branch of the government should be allowed to tell anyone what they can or cannot do with their body. Philosophically, I'm pro-life, because I WAS an unplanned pregnancy. I also don't think it's cool for a woman to have an abortion simply because she doesn't happen to want a child at that particular moment. If you don't want a child, then take steps to PREVENT pregnancy. If you're on birth control and you still get pregnant, then take the hint from the universe! ;)

Every sperm is sacred! Every sperm is great! If a sperm gets wasted, God gets quite irate.

The Protection of Sperm act is long overdue. I believe they should also be given the right to vote. And my sperm will vote Republican. Which is as it should be as they have a receptacle in common.
