Five dogs, waiting to be adopted at Nowata's Animal Shelter. A shelter, some say the city has badly mismanaged.

"I would like to see it bulldozed and rebuilt completely," says pet owner, Herman Anders.

Herman Anders has a family of shih tzus, including puppies. He says he would never want his pets to spend even a night at this shelter, saying, "It's bad."

"I would destroy them before I put them out there," says Anders.

Others in Nowata are expressing their outrage on the local newspaper's Facebook page.

Janet writes: "I will no longer keep silent. For the record, I was told if I stayed off Facebook, Smyser (the city manager) would let my son volunteer!!!!!!!!!!! (At the animal shelter) How is that for some crap from our wonderful city officials??????????????????"

Les wants to know:

"Why was it ever allowed to get that bad in the first place ????? Just saying!!!"

Locals tell me, the shelter has had a flea and tick infestation. I asked the Nowata Chief of Police about it but he was less than eager to show his face.

"They were saying there was a big flea and tick infestation, too. Is that true?" I asked the Chief of Police. "I don't know," he responded.

"That's a question for the shelter keeper."

But that's someone we couldn't find. The chief admits, the shelter has had an ongoing sewage problem.

There was some back up issue, not running into the floor.

"I hope the city does something about it right away," says Anders.

I spoke with the city manager off camera and the mayor, they both tell me that problem has been fixed. Apparently, the original pipes were too small, for all the waste you'd expect to find in a shelter.

Just learned from a reliable source that the 70 dogs currently on death row have until January 1st before they are SHOT TO DEATH, as ordered by the City Manager, Thomas Smyser. Apparently, an Oklahoma state law requiring humane euthanasia provides an exception for small jurisdictions who lack the funds to perform euthanasia by injection. Smyser claims there are no funds so the dogs will have to be cruelly, painfully and inhumanely shot to death. These are all beautiful, healthy dogs who do not deserve to die by any means, and especially not by gunshot. Please bombard City Manager Smyser, the mayor and all city officials with your outrage and demand the SLAUGHTER of these innocent dogs be stopped! maybe they should not take in 59 dogs out of a breeding kennel that was taking care of them and lying about conditions, then putting them in worse conditions!!!!!

I was in a work related accident, settled finally by weekly payments after 3 yrs., I'm now disable, folled by this now. This affects me because I was told if I didn't get my dogs off property new owners of property would file "ABANDOMENT" charges in NOWATA. I'm in a desperate situation. Where I was living, the owner lost the home/property, sold in Sheriffs sale, sheriff & one of the new owners ordered a 48 hr exit (5pm, 6-11-2011). Had NO TIME to get dogs off property. 6-8-2011 I called Nowata & EVERY northeastern recue. I was told by one, Joplin has tapped a lot of resourses. NOWATA NEVER CALLED ME BACK. I have 5 fixed cowdogs. 2 would make u a hit on YouTube, they literally smile when showed affection. PLEASE HELP ME!!!
