Families returned home after an apartment fire in midtown Tulsa to find their homes were no longer livable.

FOX23’s Janai Norman talked to neighbors who worked together to help each other out as the fire was burning.

One man told FOX23 what he did after seeing his neighbors trapped, screaming for help.

“I was hearing people like, ‘Oh, my God,” said Torrance Lacour.

He said that's about the time it started to get hectic. He said he heard screams, saw smoke and then flames.

“I had a few scares because those flames were jumping up so high, I thought it was going to take the whole building,” he said.

To escape the burning building, neighbors had to run into freezing cold temperatures.

But some, like Lacour’s neighbors, were trapped on their shared balcony, with flames at their front door.

“I had to run back. They were screaming, they were running back and forth across the balcony, they were kind of freaking, trying to figure out how to get off of it, so I let them in through my sliding glass doors, through the house and out the front door,” he said.

FOX23 talked with another man who said neighbors helped him escape to safety through a window.

“I proceeded to open the front door and I saw a blaze, I shut the door. I started noticing smoke coming in my apartment,” said Johnny Harris.

Harris has lived in the complex for nine years; he told FOX23 the window was his only way to safety.

And he's thankful neighbors were there to help.

“Very thankful because I’m a little heavy and it was pretty hard to try to climb through that window, I was probably going to have to make a mad dash on my face to get out of there so it’s a comfort knowing that somebody looked out and saw I was trying to get out,” said Harris.
