A family pet mauls a 1yr old baby, neighbors say the dog was chained up all day and night. The baby got outside where the dog's food was, when the pitbull attacked.

"Its a bad dog, it came over here, its been running around the neighborhood its killed a few dogs in the neighborhood too," neighbor Tammy Queen said.

Queen also says the pit bull that mauled a 1yr old has been terrorizing the neighborhood, including Tammy and her family.

"When a dogs tied on a chain left out on a chain, it makes them meaner. He's eating and that baby comes over there hes going to attack it, because hes not familiar with it," Tammy said.

Experts say it doesn't matter the breed of the dog, there are just certain times when an animal shouldn't be messed with.

" Its never wise to allow children around an animal when eating they are animals you know a dog is an animal. You never know what is going to trigger them, this could be a life long pet," SPCA's Rhonda Lang said.

Rhonda says the breed gets a bad wrap, and even though she acknowledges it might be some of the DNA in the dog. But, she says the way the dog is raised can make all the difference.

" They were originally bread to be a nanny dog, that's their nickname the nanny dog. Through the years they realized how strong and powerful they were and that's when they started training them for the fighting," Lang said.

I will blame the parents in every aspect. 99 out of 100 times the way a dog acts is from the owners. Couple that with how the 1 year old got outside un supervised and the blame rests on the parents completely. I seriously hope the baby will fine, but accountability needs to be placed on the responsible party, not the animal.

So, like I guessed, there was more to this than what was originally reported. Sensationalism at it's best. Chaining a dog is not something I'd ever do. Also, saying you do so because it has "Mexican blood in her" is ignorant and borderline racist.

DDBresq, I have to chain one of my dogs up as she has Mexican blood in her, she can be over the fence and gone before I get to her. Granted she is in the house most of the time but outside she needs to be chained.

Excuse me but a chained dog is not a "family pet" it is either a status symbol,a cheap security system or a lawn ornament. A family pet lives inside with their family. This Child paid and the animal both paid the ultimate price for the caretakers using a dog instead of properly caring for him. They should be held accountable for creating a vicious dog and then allowing a child to become the victim of the animal!

Where were the parents in all this? A one year old outside by themselves, are you kidding me? I have a pitbull myself and a 10 year old daughter. Its not the dog, its the owners responsibility to curb food aggression. All dogs are territorial when it comes to food not just pitbulls. Give me a break!

I am certainly not blaming the parents, they are grieving enough as it is, my question is, how on earth did a year old BABY get outside to where the dog was without the parents knowing it ? My heart and prayers go out to this baby and family, God bless and be with the Drs. caring for this precious ANGEL.
