The Muskogee Police Department is raising money for two young boys they rescued from a car accident that killed their mom in July. The department used Facebook to reach out to the community and it worked.
Franklin’s grandmother Peggy Carney said, “There’s been an outpouring unbelievably.”
Police said a truck hit Franklin’s car on West Shawnee. The 28-year-old pregnant, mother of two died from her injuries.
Franklin’s mother Sherry King, described her daughter, “She was just a good person.”
Franklin’s family told FOX23 reporter Price McKeon that Franklin was driving back home to Eufaula with her two boys after buying a crib for her child that was due in September.
Carney said, “I nicknamed her my honey bunny and she will always be my honey bunny.”
A FOX23 viewer sent us iPhone video of the July 16th accident scene. Corporal Michael Mahan was one of the first officers at the accident.
Mahan said, “People just sort of came out of everywhere. They were helping us with the children.”
He said he wanted to help a grieving family after the two kids lost their mother. He set up a fundraiser and posted about it on Facebook.
He said, “When you put something like this out there, you don’t know what type of response you’re going to get.”
He said the response was overwhelming, “I’ve had people call saying ‘I can’t go to the breakfast but I want to buy so many tickets. Either you give them to someone or we’ll give them to someone.’”
Carney said, “Oh I hope to meet some of these people.”
Mahan said the department has raised more than $2,000 to help pay for funeral costs and to set up a trust for Franklin’s two boys. He said the fund is set up through the department’s Citizen’s Academy nonprofit group.
Carney said, “I just thank them so much because they would have no idea what that would have meant to Crystal.”
Franklin’s family said she was separated from her husband at the time of the accident.
Police said the accident is still under investigation but as of now they think the other driver had a medical emergency.
Mahan said the next fundraiser is 8 a.m. at Applebee’s located at 415 W. Shawnee on Aug 17. He said more information can be found on the Muskogee Police Department’s Facebook page.
