Three people are dead after a head-on collision west of Sapulpa along Highway 33 and County Road 193rd West Ave.
Just after on Sunday, OHP believe the driver in the westbound lane swerved over the center line into the eastbound lane along Highway 33. All three victims suffered massive injuries and were pinned in their vehicles for 45 minutes before emergency crews used the Jaws of Life to rescue them.
The victim in a green pick-up was 36-year old Carmen D. Spicer of Mannford and driving an SUV was 54-year-old Donald L. Clift of Amarillo, Texas and his 52-year-old wife was in the passenger seat Jana T. Clift.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Mark Southall said this is the hardest part of his job.
“It’s heartbreaking, in fact when we leave here we are going to go tell a daughter that her parents aren’t going to make it to dinner tonight,” said Southall. “So, it is personal and it’s hard on us all especially those with kids.”
He does not take speeding and drivers who do not pay attention to the road lightly, especially when the roads are slick like they were on Sunday afternoon.
“It’s devastating,” said Southall. “We come out here and try to do the best we can to make this a safe environment for drive in. We take things like left of center and speeding for a reason; this out come today (Sunday) is the reason we take stuff so seriously.”
Troopers closed the road just after Sunday for almost three hours as they cleaned the wreckage.
It will be a number of weeks before investigators will be able to determine how this accident happened.
