The mother of an 11-year-old hit in front of her middle school speaks out. Stephanie Brown talks only to FOX23 on Tuesday about what happened to her daughter when she dropped her off at Nowata Middle School on Monday.

FOX23’s Price McKeon talked with the school’s superintendent about what changes the school has already made in 24 hours.

Brown said her daughter was walking across the street to get to Nowata Middle School’s new front doors when an SUV backed into her child Monday.

Brown said they want answers from the school about missing crosswalks and missing crossing guards.

She said, “Her (child’s) head hit the window then it just knocked her down.”

Brown said says that’s what happened after she dropped her 11-year-old off at school  Monday.

She said, “She’s (her child) constantly throwing up. She’s got bad headaches. She’s got neck pain.”

The middle-schooler had her arm in a cast Tuesday.

Brown describes Monday morning, “I had dropped my daughter off and I was sitting there watching her go in.”

Then she said she saw a woman parked in the parking lot in front of the new entrance to Nowata Middle school back into her daughter.

Middle school started late this school year. It started last week because of construction.

Brown said she understands that but she does not understand why some things are missing.

She said, “But they could have at least put up stop signs. They could have put up a crosswalk. They could have had someone down there directing traffic while the construction is still going.”

FOX23 walked where kids get dropped off. We found sidewalks that end. We found three speed humps on the street in front of the middle school. We did not find any crosswalks so we asked the superintendent about that.

Nowata schools superintendent Kathryn Berry said, “We just hadn’t marked the parking lot or the cross walk at this point but it was going to be done.”

Berry said the school has already put cones in front of the unmarked parking lot.

She said, “We never want a child getting hurt on our property at all.”

Berry said within less than 24 hours the school had more people out monitoring traffic before and after school. FOX23 was there when school let out Tuesday afternoon. We did see an officer parked in front of the middle school.

Brown told FOX23 her daughter will have an arm cast for up to four months.

FOX23 is working to find out if police have issued any citations.

The driver in this story is NOT the Nowata County Court Clerk. She is NOT the daughter of the lady who works in the District Attorney's Office. She is a CITY employee, not a COUNTY employee.

Somehow my last comment was deleted. I will post again that you all have your facts completely wrong. Yes Fox 23, please do another story but this time make sure you get the real facts to set these people straight. Things get so twisted and distorted and it cracks me up that people actually believe everything they hear. Folks, wake up. Only believe half of what you see and nothing of what you hear.

Hey fox 23, of course there won't be any citations issued. The driver who works in the Nowata County Court clerks office, is the daughter of the woman who has been Nowata's district attorney's assistant for 20 or more years, plus they're all good ole boy buddies with all the city and county cops. I hope the mother of this child sues their a$$'$ off. Work on that story Fox 23.

Citations are punishments for doing wrong... not for something that wasnt supposed to happen. Im pretty positive this was not intentional and only an idot would even suggest a citation. Some of you need a dictionary. Make sure you look up manslaughter and accident first!

Why would a citation be issued? It was an ACCIDENT. Not all accidents require that a citation be issued.

I agree with letsgetitright. Has fox 23 found out if any citations were issued yet? Love to here more of your comments and updates.

So sad to see this story! I don't know what id do if my son was hit by a car in a school zone. Hope the child recovers well and thank the lord he or she was not ran completely over or hurt any worse than what did happen. Since this story aired I have caught myself as a responsible adult driver paying extra caution while dropping my son off at school for other children around with common sense or not.
