A man had to be rescued from a creek on Highway 51 near Highway 97.

Sand Springs police said a car went off the road, but the driver was nowhere to be found.

It turns out the driver fled from his car and jumped down into a nearby creek.

A passerby told police they saw the man leave his car after he ran it off the road. They said he climbed down into the creek.

Police said the suspect crawled a ways down the creek until it went behind some houses. That's where police found him.

But by then the side embankments were too steep for police to get to him. He wasn't able to get any further either because he was in a walking cast from a previous injury. So they called in the Sand Springs Fire Department to help pull him out with some special equipment.

"It's basically just a wire basket. It's rigid and has some handholds so we can easily maneuver it. We put a tag line on it so we can keep some tension on it from up above and just basically lifted him," said Sand Springs Fire Chief Mike Wood.

The suspect was looked at by EMSA on scene and was taken away by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
