Oklahoma Highway Patrol told FOX23 that a man who was pulled over and accused of driving drunk threw several punches at a state trooper.
FOX23 News was there as he was taken into custody.
Lt. Vern Wilson says the trooper asked the suspect to sit inside the patrol car so he could talk to him about what happened.
When the trooper realized the suspect was visibly drunk or high on drugs, he tried to arrest the man, but the suspect didn't just resist, he started throwing punches, Wilson told FOX23.
"It wasn't simply that he wasn't non compliant or trying to be cuffed," Wilson said. "He was trying to escape the trooper’s grip and struck him several times."
The lieutenant said this started near 41st and Sheridan when the suspect crossed over the lines in a Toyota FJ Cruiser and almost hit the trooper head-on.
The trooper turned around and tried to pull the man over, but he didn't stop for about half a mile.
The lieutenant said the suspect hit the trooper in the head at least three times and the trooper had to fight back to get the suspect into handcuffs.
When FOX23 got on the scene, the suspect was sitting on the ground and at one point yelling at officers.
The suspect was taken to the hospital to get checked out and the highway patrol says he will be taken to jail.
The trooper was also hurt from the fight, but he was checked on the scene and expected to be OK.
Right now FOX23 News is working on getting the suspect's name and his mugshot. When he's booked in the jail, FOX23 will see some of the charges he could be facing.
