Of course it was never stated what kind of tent it was. Quite possibly a normal nylon tent. What's more possible would be a hooch made of sheets of plastic moisture condensation from respiration freezing between layers could seal the air in or out. Condolences to friends and family of these two deceased men. May they rest in peace.

Doesn't really matter if the tent was open or closed, there is still ample air passage through the weave of the tent, I think some of the story hasn't been revealed yet.

It doesnt say the tent was open. It is possible this is true especially if they laid there all night in it. Just like sitting in a car within an enclosed garage.

This is simply not plausible. A candle is not going to use up all the air (or produce enough CO) to be fatal inside something like a tent. Also, reporters shouldn't take a patrolmans guesswork over that of a Medical Examiner.
