Is OK lucky enough for a Powerball winner?

On Tuesday at QuikTrip the lottery machines sounded like a broken record.

Dozens of Tulsans were chipping-in for a chance at Easy Street with a $500 Million Powerball jackpot at stake in Wednesday’s drawing.

“Usually when it gets this big, it's that drive, the excitement about maybe even winning,” Will Butts told FOX23.

But some seem to think being an Oklahoman doesn't mean you'll see those jackpot winnings any sooner.

“There's frequent winners in other states; I don't really hear about winners in Oklahoma,” Robin Ferguson said.

“I haven't seen too many winners out of Oklahoma,” Broken Arrow resident Rick Battin said.

“It seems like most of the winnings come from the north or the north east,” Butts said.

FOX23 charted it out a map of all 89 Powerball winners since Oklahoma started playing in 2006.

Oklahoma’s had four jackpot winners or about four and a half percent of the jackpots claimed. Only Pennsylvania, Louisiana, and Indiana have seen more. Still, not everyone is impressed with that track record.

“I don't think that's a very good record,” Battin said.

Battin could be on to something. Oklahoma hasn't had a big winner since November of 2009.

Almost three years to the day of Wednesday’s big drawing. Oklahoma's winners have won jackpots averaging just about $81.5 Million.

“I know of one big one a few years ago, but I don't know of any other big winners,” Nancy Bollinger said.

That $81.5 Million is by no means chump change, but it’s no where close to the mega jackpots that generate national attention.

That’s not keeping anyone at QuikTrip from taking a leap of faith.

“The chances of you winning are very slim, but it's a little hope, and that's all we all need is hope,” Rodney Brown said.

If Rodney wins big Wednesday night, he says, “I am never leaving Oklahoma.”

Oklahomans have until 8:59 Wednesday night to buy Powerball tickets. They are $2 each, and lottery officials say there is about a 60 percent chance that someone will have the winning ticket tomorrow.

FOX23 tried to call the Oklahoma Lottery Commission on Tuesday to get their thoughts on whether Oklahoma has difficulty hitting the jackpot, but our calls were not returned.

@tazzzz it's one ticket out of all the aggregate ticket sales in a multistate draw. Were talking about one ticket:-> I doubt if it will happen to me :-) I didn't buy a ticket.

Im amazed this is really a story. It is so obvious why Oklahoma hasnt had a big winner more often than other states. Oklahoma has just a tick over 3 million people in the entire state. There are cities all over this country that have that many and more in just one city alone. Just like the game its self, its all in the odds of the numbers.
