One of Tulsa radio’s most iconic duo is leaving the airwaves in October.

Phil and Brent, hosts of the Morning Drive on KMOD for the past 25 years, announced on Thursday morning their last day on the air will be Friday, October 12th after a weeklong send-off starting on October 8th.

The raucous pair received regional and national fame in the early 90’s with the invention of the character Roy D. Mercer. The larger than life good ol’ boy would prank call unsuspecting victims, triggering laughs with catchphrases like “How big a boy are ya?”

Brent Douglas and Phil Stone took Mercer to the nation later in the 90’s when they released the sketches with Capitol Records.

KMOD Operations Manager Don “DC” Christi issued a statement on their pending departure today. He confirmed that KMOD and Stone and Douglas could not reach an agreement on a contract extension.

“They have meant so much to me as the Program Director of KMOD, our listeners, our clients and decades of fellow employees, that I find myself speechless and lacking the proper level of hyperbole to sum up their exit,” said Christi.

Brent Douglas originally posted about their departure on his Twitter page:
  • Thanks for the almost 27 years you folks have let us have fun and get paid for it. Don't know what's next but I'll bet it won't compare.
  • Out next week, then it's a weeklong blowout after over a 1/4 of a century. Few media people get the chance to say bye, so thanks KMOD.
  • Just to clarify. Yep, we're fading into the sunset. It's been a gas. Thanks for all your kind words and support. Dont know much else to say.
Fans of the duo praised their on-air camaraderie and the fun nature of the show.

They know how to relax and have fun, for that time slot that they're on for those few hours, they just enjoy themselves,” Scott Hannaford told FOX23.

Hannaford was upset to hear about the pair’s decision and says it will be impossible to fill their shoes on Tulsa radio airwaves.

You can never replace Phil and Brent, they're too unique. They came up with something that worked for them, that if anyone else tried to pull off, they wouldn't be able to.”

KMOD is a Rock format radio station owned by Clear Channel Communications. Christi said in his statement that future plans for the morning daypart on KMOD would be announced soon.

Douglas told FOX23’s Adam Paluka that both he and Stone would not be making any comments about their departure to the media.

I once listened to these guys religiously. They have provided so much very funny stuff over the years. But lets face it, their shtick was getting a little long in the tooth and it was becoming clear the joy was also no longer in it for them. Like Seinfield you have to know when to gracefully bowel out. I just hope they take Brett Thompson with them.

I'm glad to see them go. They weren't even funny. I will say, however, that Clear Channel is stupid and have ruined all radio stations they have taken over.

I wonder how many early morning wrecks these guys have caused? You could replace them with a flock of crows in a corn field. There wouldn't be much difference.

Absolutely dislike! You are what gets me up in the morning and wanting to take the long hour drive into work. I have listened to you every morning for the past 10 years, PHIL & BRENT is all I know! Sorry, KMOD..but you will be losing me as a listening. Phil & Brent will always have my heart.. I will make sure I follow wherever they may go or do. Will miss you guys like crazy and I just cannot believe this is happening. First Nina V. is off of 96.5 and now Phil & Brent are leaving.. whats up with Clear Channel Communications!
