Detectives are searching for a carjacker who targeted a grandmother in downtown Tulsa Thursday night.

The 81-year-old woman was parking her car at the Chalkboard restaurant, police said, when someone opened her door,
pulled her out of the driver’s seat, stole her car and ran her over.

The woman’s son talked exclusively with FOX23 reporter Price McKeon.

He told FOX23 a restaurant employee came to his mother’s rescue. He said he is thankful that a restaurant employee stepped in.

His said his message to tell the employee, “You potentially saved my mother from death. You really did. So, thank you very much.”

Her son, Matt, did not want FOX23 to show his face or use his last name because police are still searching for the man they said ran over his mom Thursday around 6 p.m.

He said, “My estimation (is) he’s a hero. He could have saved her from a kidnapping situation.”

Matt said he was inside waiting for his mom at the time.

He said, “I came up on the scene with my mother on the ground bleeding and disoriented.”

Police said his mother was parking her car outside when witnesses told police  a man approached her and pulled her out of the car.

Restaurant employees heard the commotion and ran outside. That was when her son said one employee ran straight into danger.

He said, “As I understand, he prevented this man (the carjacker) from putting my mother in the back of her car.  He (the employee) attempted to try to pull that man) out of the car,  the assailant.”

Police said the suspect threw the car into reverse, knocking over the grandmother, then back to drive, running over her.

FOX23 learned police found her car Friday morning just a few miles from the restaurant  at the Tulsa Historical Society.

Matt said his mother is in pain but her wounds will heal with time. He said if it was not for that brave employee, he does not think he would be able to say that.

He described the employee, “You’re a rock star.”

We checked with police Friday afternoon and they said no arrest has been made. They said the suspect had a shaved head.
