Girl Burned At Splash Pad

A child is burned in a place you might think it could never happen - at a splash park.

And those burns were bad. Two weeks later, the little girl still couldn't walk.

This happened in Jenks at the splash pad in the Central Park.

The burns are not easy to look at, but the child's mother thinks it's important you do.

FOX23's Janna Clark* has the story.

Lindy heard her youngest daughter - 18-month-old Madison- scream in pain.

"I turned around and grabbed her and stuck her feet in the water, and I looked at them and realized they were more than just hot - she was burned," Lindy said.

She stepped onto a hot metal ground covering just a few feet from the splash pad in Jenks.

"I was absolutely freaking out," Lindy said.

Doctors at the Hillcrest Burn Center said Madison had second-degree burns.

"She's had golf size blisters on the bottom of her feet," Lindy said.

Lindy says Madison screamed and cried for five hours, until the pain medication kicked in.

"I fellt horrible for her. She's been unable to walk. We've had to keep her feet constantly wrapped," Lindy said.

Lindy says parents need to know what happened and also know the City of Jenks has done little about it.

'They gave me a claim form, told me they were sorry and sent me on my way," she said.

The next day, she found a rug, covering the hot metal at the splash pad.

FOX23 went to check it out. Now the rug is gone, and we found not just one metal covering but another one right next to it.

City attorney Steve Oakley admits the metal coverings are hot. But he says the city recommends kids wear rubber-soled shoes. That's posted on a nearby sign.

He said the city's only received one complaint, but he said Public Works would come and look at the situation.

"I don't think it's dangerous, but I think we could alleviate some of the potential problem." Oakley said.

Lindy thinks it is dangerous and worries what happened to Madison could happen again.

There's a new development to the story. Since FOX23 came out to do the story, the city of Jenks came back out.

A crew painted a white rubberized paint over both metal coverings.

Oakley says hopefully that will make the area safer.

IF you have a safety concern about any city park,

contact the city and fill out a complaint form.
