Thieves are lurking around gas pumps not to steal fuel but to steal items out of your car.

It is known to happen in just seconds.

Thieves could steal a purse, your laptop, cell phone or anything in your car while your back is turned to the thief.

Green country police are on alert.

Drivers caught chatting on their cell phone, texting, staring at the pump all while their back is against the car.

"I’m never looking,” said driver Lauren Frank.

Surveillance video on Youtube showed the driver’s door open. As she gets back in her SUV, a thief drives by, opens the passenger door and snatches her purse.

"I would think I would feel that car moving or something but really I probably wouldn't,” said Frank.

Frank’s car was unlocked and she had plenty of bags and items to steal in her car.

"I think we are in a very vulnerable position pumping gas especially women," said driver Robin Mickle.

Even men are on alert.

"My co-workers [women] always talk about locking their doors but I didn't even think about it,” said driver Chris Webber.

Another surveillance video showed two women chatting by the pump. A drive by purse snatcher steals the woman’s purse in seconds.

"That is just brazen and it's scary that it is that easy,” said Mickle.

It started to sink in for drivers when FOX23 News showed them the surveillance video. Local police departments say they haven’t seen it happening in the area yet but they’ve received and alert of it happening across the country and watched the videos.

"It's scary, it's really scary,” said driver Christie Harrison.

As cautious as people want to be, in the split second you turn your back you can be a target.

"I’ll be more cautious. Looking around doesn't mean anything," said Townlui.

Police recommend you lock your doors, take your purse with you and pay attention to what’s going on around you.

Anyone can be a target. In Houston, a thief targeted a woman who happened to be an FBI agent. Her purse was stolen with her badge and gun inside.

Another story about scum bags preying on the weak. One of these days, people will realize that the world we live in is not the same as it used to be. The scum bags are multiplying at an even greater pace and our justice system is far from perfect, so these stories will only continue. What great country we live in. We emphasize the middle east so much, that we tend to over look the scum bags in our own community. Hopefully this story doesn't give the scum of tulsa any bright ideas and the next story on this topic is shown from a Quiktrip security camera.

@carolsue1ok thank you so much for posting this information. I did not think of that and would love to use this idea especially during the shopping season. I appreciate your efforts to stay safe.

Lock the freakin door. Never has it been so simple to just lock the door. A simple click of a button on your key ring. If you are driving an old whoopti then keep your money in your pants. That way when they take your money you get some kind of cheap thrill.

here is what you need to do is to wear a safety wallet. It is just a wallet on a string and you wear around your neck under your clothes so if someone grabs for your purse then you still have the wallet. The whole secret is not to let anyone know. I wear my when I have money or at night ever since my purse was taken from me as I struggled to hold onto it. My son wore one when he was on the greyhound bus. At least if you are at the gas station keep your debit card and money in your pocket.
