Rogers County Sheriff’s deputies followed some footprints in the snow that lead to a suspected culprit.

“On the one day it snows in two years, this guy decides to break into his neighbor’s home and steal things,” said Rogers County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Jerry Smittle.  “Talk about your dumbest criminals.”

Smittle and the other deputies who made the arrest were dumbfounded by 21-year-old Joseph Barbee’s decisions and quick confession.

“My deputies went over once to ask him what he was doing walking around his neighbor’s homes, Barbee said he was new to the neighborhood and just was walking around,” said Smittle.  “Then my guys went back over to his home and asked him if he knew anything about his neighbor’s back door being broken into and the screen being broken, then he paused, and said he did it.  It was comical!  Then my deputy asked him where the items he stole were, and he said in his bedroom.   It took longer to write the report than it did to make him confess,” laughed Smittle.

Barbee admitted to stealing a 55-inch flat screen television, and several smaller items including cassettes tapes.

“That shows his desperation! Who steals cassette tapes, unless you have a radio from 1986?” laughed Smittle.

Needless to say, the sheriff’s office made fun of the situation.

Smittle even posted the arrest to the Rogers County Facebook page.

“Having a sense of humor helped make the story explode on Facebook. It’s been shared hundreds of times and has hundreds of comments already!”

Barbee has been arrested in Rogers County and in Tulsa before for similar charges and others including possession or selling of paraphernalia.  He is booked on second degree burglary charges in Rogers County jail.
