One feature of Facebook Messenger could lead strangers right where they want, and children might be giving those strangers more personal information than they could ever imagine.

Joey McGrath calls himself an avid Facebook user.

“I probably get on Facebook everyday, and I use it to communicate with people around me, see what's going on, see what people are doing,” he said.

He's checking his newsfeed, “usually on my phone, computer seldom, but usually my phone.”

Even this Facebook pro didn't know that if you are using the latest version of the Facebook Messager app or the Facebook app with the default settings, he could be sending his exact location to every person he chats with.

“I did not know that this feature existed. That's really weird, and kind of freaky in a way to track exactly where that is,” McGrath said.

The high school senior knows people could take advantage of knowing his location.

“I do get messages from people I don't know, (and I respond) sometimes.”

When you update the Facebook app, things change and this feature is one of those changes.

Joey's friend Josh says even though there's fine print explaining the changes, teens don't bother to read it.

“They just want to the newest, latest version of it and move on,” Josh Yocham said.

Josh also says Facebook wasn't very forthright.

“(They) didn't really tell us we're getting this update; it just happened. So, it's easy for people you don't know to check in and see where you're at.”

Joey thinks he knows how his mom would feel about the feature.

“I think she'd like the fact that she could track it, but I don't think she'd like that other people could see where I am at all times.”

He is ready to protect himself and his privacy.

“I am, definitely am, and I will probably turn it off when we're done (with this interview).”
