Law enforcement agents involved in the investigation into the shooting death of Mary Escue revealed details about how they found the 14-year old suspect.
Investigators say Sapulpa police contacted them after getting a tip about items from the crime scene they had seen, the tipster had also heard about the murder.
After the search in Sapulpa the victim’s missing car was located and deputies took three occupants into custody for questioning.
After interviewing two of the occupants deputies discovered there was a .22 caliber rifle that was in the vehicle earlier that day, the rifle was confiscated in connection to the home invasion.
Joshua Mooney was interviewed while his mother was present, deputies say he and his mother signed waivers that he would speak to the investigators.
Deputies say Mooney told them he broke into the house through a window to look for money. They say Mooney said he found four firearms while he was looking for money and was searching the house when the victim came home.
Deputies say Mooney told them he hid in the kitchen with the rifle when he heard the victim in the house and once the woman came inside Mooney told deputies he surprised her and forced her into the computer room at gunpoint.
Deputies say Mooney told them he aimed the rifle at her head and fired a shot, he told deputies he knew he got her because she did not make any sounds and there was blood on the floor.
Mooney stated he then gathered some change that was around the house and some money from the victim’s wallet. Mooney stated he then took the keys to the victim’s car and drove to Sapulpa because he had to get out of Tulsa County for what he had done.
Mooney told deputies he took the rifle with him when he left.
Mary Escue's family released a short statement about being heartbroken over her death. Escue, 47, was found shot to death in her parents home in Jenks late Monday night. Investigators say She lived in Nevada with her husband and was visiting family in Tulsa. Her parents discovered her body just after midnight on Monday. Jenks police say her death is the first murder in Jenks since 2007.
Joshua Mooney, 14, was arrested on Tuesday night for the crime. Investigators do not believe Mooney knew the victim or her parents, they do not know how or why he chose that house.
Officials say David L. Moss often houses inmates under the age of 17, but they are pretty sure this may be the first time they've held a 14-year old on a murder charge.
