Day after Christmas becoming another big shopping day

Forget about Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The day after Christmas, and in some cases the entire week after Christmas, is quickly becoming another big shopping period.

The National Retail Federation reports holiday spending was down again in 2012, but retailers are learning they can boost their holiday revenue by holding sales over the days after Christmas.

On Wednesday, Tulsa resident Brittany Crawford was at the Best Buy store in the Tulsa Hills shopping center hunting for deals. Crawford works in retail at the Bath and Body Works store in Woodland Hills mall, so she knew there would be deals to be had.

"[Bath and Body Works marked] 75 percent off some of our stuff," Crawford said. "And I know a lot of stores are doing that. They're doing 50 to 75 percent off, which is smart because people are still looking for deals even after Christmas."

And it's not just the deals she's after. Before Christmas she simply had no desire to fight the crowds at her favorite stores.

"I avoided it for the last few weeks," she said. "I avoided Walmart and Best Buy and the mall when I didn't have to work."

That's the same reason Tulsan Nancy Grayson waited until Wednesday to start looking for a new computer.

"I thought the traffic would be less, but apparently... it seems like there are a lot of people at the store," Grayson said.

The possibility of a big sale or great deal was just an added bonus for her.

"I sure do hope that I get a better deal," she said.

Better deals also brought 11-year-old David Grigsby out to shop with his uncle on Wednesday.

"I found some discounts at Dick's on some batting gloves and some basketballs," he said.

His sister, Molly Grigsby, enjoyed the sales, but said she hopes more people don't discover the advantages of shopping after Christmas next year.

"Definitely less people, and it's easier just to find your way around the store and ask people for help because not everyone's there," she said.

The growing popularity of giving gift cards as Christmas gifts has also contributed to the increase in sales after the holiday. Store managers at Best Buy say those with gift cards tend to buy things worth a little more than the gift card, so they end up spending even more money.

Whatever the reason people headed to the stores, Crawford said this growing trend is a win-win, because it's good for shoppers, the stores, and the economy in general.

"It's smart and it's smart business to do that, because people will go to several stores to get the best deals," she said.
