After baking more than 9,000 cupcakes a 5th grader from Broken Arrow has surpassed her fundraising goal in the fight against cancer.
“I raised $10,000 dollars exactly,” said 10-year-old Sydney Wyre, “It makes me so happy.”
Sydney’s original goal was $500 dollars.
FOX23 has been following Sydney’s fundraising efforts since she began in August. The 10-year-old started a fundraising business called Syd’s Cupcakes for a Cure. She charged one dollar per cupcake and all of the earnings were donated to
Dance for a Cure.
Sydney said she chose this event because her dance teacher and role model, Miss Kim, inspired her.
Kim Miller-Clark from Extension Dance Academy and Pom Zone in Broken Arrow founded Dance for a Cure in 2006 after losing her father to lung cancer. Dance for a Cure is a community of dancers from in and around the Tulsa area who come together every January to fund raise for cancer research. 100 percent of the proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.
“Everyone is affected by cancer in some way,” said Kim Miller-Clark, “I do this for my Dad and he would be very proud.”
Miss Kim says her goal with the event is to help find a cure for cancer and to teach her young dancers to give back to their community. She says that she is extremely proud of Sydney’s efforts.
“What an exceptional child,” said Miller-Clark.
On January 13th Sydney presented her $10,000 contribution check to Dance for A Cure 2013. The event raised $117,000 for the American Cancer Society.
