US News and World Reports named a Tulsa high school as the top public high school in the state.

Booker T. Washington is the only school in Tulsa to make the list of the top ten schools in the state.

Principal James Furch tells FOX23 his students know when they step inside this building they are expected to work hard and so are his teachers, “a lot of times teachers don't get the compliments they deserve, but we try to tell them as often as we possibly can."

Furch often rewards them with special luncheons and BTW clothing to wear.

BTW is a magnet school, which means students are selected to attend based on academic achievement and through an application process.

Officials say being number one isn't always easy, "we still get kids who have difficulty eating and coming to school, and those kinds of things so we have to work with those things."

Attendance is also a daily battle. Administrators spend a lot of time talking to kids if they don't show up for class. The students that do show up hold their teachers to a very high standard, "there are a lot of times here where a student will raise their hand and say how old is that information and where did you get that information."

The school also puts a strong emphasis on advanced placement classes, to make sure students are ready for college.

The US News and World Reports compiled their list by grading schools on reading and math scores, as well as college readiness and the number of disadvantaged students who are enrolled. The School for the Talented and Gifted in Dallas was named the top school in the nation.
