Billboards Too Bright?

You may have seen them driving around town.

They're flashy billboards, which are actually LED screens, and some viewers emailed us, concerned they could be a big distraction drivers.

FOX23's Janna Clark has the story.

The new LED signs are much brighter than your normal billboard, especially when it's dark.

That's why some Tulsans are concerned.

No doubt they're different - flashier and brighter.

LED signs definitely catch your attention, which is what ads are supposed to do. But could that be a bad thing?

Tom Rorabaugh thinks so.

"It just jumped out at me," Rorabaugh said.

Tom knows outdoor lighting. It's what he does for a living.

And he has serious concerns about the bright signs on the side of the highway.

"The color, the brightness, the speed, the transitions, it's almost like a large TV screen, Rorabaugh said.

He says during the day he doesn't see much of a problem. But at night - that's a different story.

"The contrast is pretty intense. I think what most concerns me is the brightness of the transitions - they're so quick," Rorabaugh said.

Police Officer Craig Murray has his own concerns.

"It's to the driver's disadvantage because they do have a tendency to look 'oh that's bright' or it catches their eye more," Murray said.

Police say it's not necessarily dangerous to glance away for a second, but it can be if you look away too long, or if it's just bad timing.

"Anything could happen - a car could stop in front of you or a car could change lanes in front of you," Murray said.

Murray says as far as he knows, the signs haven't caused any accidents.

"Not that anybody's wanted to admit to," Murray said.

But he and Tom both say it could happen.

"I hope not, but it's a real possibility," Rorabaugh said.

If you do get in a wreck or cause someone else to get in a wreck because you were distracted by one of the signs, you will get a fine for inattentive driving.

The ticket is $150.

The city council looked at this issue and okayed the LED billboards. But they put some restrictions on how bright they can be.

The city has already asked that some signs be changed that were too bright.

If you see one you think is too bright call the mayor's action line.

The number is 596-2100.

There are records of L.E.D. Billboards causing accidents in Tulsa: 'Commission member Mary Hill noted an injury accident last week on Interstate 44 near 193rd East Avenue in which a tractor-trailer rig rear-ended a street sweeper. The truck driver maintained that he had been distracted by a Cherokee Casino sign. "He stated that he glanced over at the sign for a second, which is kind of like a big-screen TV, and when he looked back he was right on top of the sweeper truck," Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Sheridan O'Neal said.' http://www.tulsaworld.com/site/printerfriendlystory.aspx?articleid=041109_Ne_A9_Flash9898 Later, at the same location another driver suffered a seizure and drove his car into the pond near the casino. And yes, Tulsa's billboards are too bright: http://www.tulsanow.org/forum/index.php?topic=13198.0 A federal study: http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/REALESTATE/elecbbrd/elecbbrd.pdf

I didn't know the city has a Mayor's Action Line. I know they have a Mayor's Action Center and you would think that the media especially Fox 23 could state something as simple as that correctly. I have called the Mayor's Action Center several times and have gotten great results. It is wonderful to call one number and get a courteous person who is helpful. I think the least that we owe them is to get their name right!!!!!!!!!

Yes, they are distracting, they also should ALL be required to be solar powered. Think of how much energy could be saved. I really see no need for ANY business, such as a furniture store, auto repair, bank, etc. to have a bright flashing sign, at 2 or 3 in the morning, or even when they are not open for business.

Of course they are to bright. But isn't it a bit late to complain about it? Shouldn't the issue have been tackled BEFORE they were installed around town? The writing was on the wall at the casino @ 81st and Riverside Drive for a long time. Those things are distracting and that is because they are made to be that way. The simple fact is this...our culture is more concerned with advertising hype any way we can serve it, than we are with safety.
