Candidate Kathy Taylor invited us along to a day care in midtown Tulsa, where she read to toddlers. This is something she enjoys doing as a grandmother now. It's a new role she savors since she lost both of her parents by the time she was 19, which is something she rarely talks about.
Kathy Taylor tells FOX23,
"The reason is I never wanted anyone to feel sorry for me. I said, okay you're gonna have to grow up quickly here. My parents had given me really the work ethic, the confidence in myself to move forward. I'm not saying it wasn't tough. It was really tough. I literally did not have a home. So in the summers I was a bit of a vagabond. I ran the elevator at the Washington Monument one summer. I lived with my older sister in Dallas one summer."
Then she gave birth to her daughter Elizabeth, and it wasn't easy taking care of a newborn without parents or grandparents around to pitch in.
"Literally, I learned to bathe Elizabeth by getting a paperback Better Homes and Gardens book that had an eight-picture diagram of how you bathe a baby and that was at the sink as I learned to bathe her."
Elizabeth, Taylor's daughter, speaks about her mother while she was growing up.
"When we were growing up she was working full time and I was going to school and it didn't change the fact that I was sick sometimes and she made my lunch every day, which I did not appreciate at the time, thank you so much, and she still cooked dinner at night and she went to all of my sporting events ... I remember the day she paid off her student loans from law school, I was in middle school. I remember it."
Taylor invited us along to meetings with local small-business leaders. She spoke to them about their successes and got to experience how they're making their dough.
Her family's incredible success in the rental car industry has led to questions about why she'd want to run for mayor a second time.
response: "People wondered why does she do this, why does she want this job as mayor, why doesn't she just go to a beach somewhere and relax? And it's really because of the passion that I was given such blessings. I believe there's a reason for that. The reason was that ignited in me a passion to give back. And that's why I'm in public service. I love this city. I'm running for office because my kids, my grandkids, my husband are here. I want to see this city be better for generations to come."
FOX23 Anchor Shae Rozzi asked both Kathy and Elizabeth for one word that best describes Kathy Taylor.
Kathy responds, Passionate."
Elizabeth said, "Energetic. She doesn't need sleep... I don't know how she meets as many people and does as much as she does, it's incredible to me. I would get exhausted but she just keeps going and going. If there's a problem, she won't quit until there's a solution or at least an idea for a solution that's going to make people happy."
Kathy replies, "And it has sometimes made me late to family dinners."
Elizabeth agrees, "Often late to family dinners, or we'll often have strangers at our family dinners who might have an idea for a solution for the city."
Kathy explains, "We welcome them."
Elizabeth grins, "I'm so proud of her. She's just such an inspiration to me."
