The huge signs are going up all around downtown Tulsa welcoming the competitors and spectators to Tulsa for the Bassmaster Classic.

When all is said and done, one fisherman will walk away with a $500,000, but
Tulsa could get a whole lot more.

When it comes to fishing competitions, there is nothing bigger than the Bassmaster Classic.

“The Bassmaster Classic is the Super Bowl of bass fishing. It is the biggest event in bass fishing that there is,” Fisherman Jeff Kreit told FOX23.

“You do it once, and it's painful not to get to do it again, especially when it's on your home lake where you grew up,” Scott Ashmore, who competed at the Classic in 2010, said.

The Classic veterans know what this event means to Tulsa.

“It’s expected to bring about $26 million to the city, which is a wonderful deal,” Ashmore said.

While the fishing happens up the turnpike on Grand Lake, the event will be headquartered in Tulsa. On Monday it was easy to see that the BOK Center will be the epicenter of the fishing world on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

“They'll have the weigh-in (at the BOK Center) everyday, so all the competitors will drive from Grand to (Tulsa) with all the fish in their boat, and weigh them in on stage in front of everyone,” Elite fisherman Jerrod Miller said.

Set up for the event will happen downtown all week while more and more competitors arrive in town.

“You have to be in an area that has the facilities to hold a major event. There's going to be a lot of people in Tulsa for these events, lots,” Kreit said.

There could be 100,000 people who visit Tulsa in the coming days to take part in the Classic. People that will stay in hotels, eat at restaurants, and spend money all to see the Classic.

“I think it's going to be big, I know people from all over the country who are flying and driving in for this,” Miller said.

FOX23 called several downtown hotels Monday to see if rooms were available this weekend. The Hyatt, Holiday Inn, and DoubleTree all told said they've been sold out for months.

Weigh-in at the BOK Center is free for spectators. An expo at the Tulsa Convention Center will be held simultaneously and is also free of charge.
