The Tahlequah Police Department asked OSBI to help investigate an apparent suicide that occurred on April 4th.

The incident happened inside the ten day city lockup facility in Tahlequah. Shawn L. Branham, 44, was booked into the city jail earlier in the evening on a charge of Public Intoxication and a hold for a Cherokee County warrant.

During a jail check, Branham was on the floor of the cell. Officers and jailers entered the cell and found a seam from the mattress around Branham’s neck, CPR was started and an ambulance was called to the scene.

Branham was transported to the Tahlequah City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office was contacted and will do an autopsy. The Oklahoma Jail Inspections Office was contacted and the investigation will continue until the Medical Examiner determines the cause of death.
