Police do not believe the mother of a toddler found wandering alone in a north Tulsa neighborhood will face charges.

A woman found the girl walking in the street, last night in a neighborhood near 56th Street North and Martin Luther King Boulevard.

A 19-month old child was found walking alone on a dark street.

"We didn't see anyone around looking for the baby or no cries for help or anything," said Latoria Simmons, who found the toddler.

Simmons and her neighbor Angela Brown took the child inside to give her a bath.

"She was very wet and dirty and so we took her inside and I changed her diaper and cleaned her up a bit, and we snapped a picture on my cellphone and walked the area and were asking people if they knew this child," said Brown.

But no one knew who the child was or who her mother could be.

"You could tell she was missing her mom though because when I laid her down to go to sleep she kind of cuddled up to me and she goes, 'night, night mommy,'" said Brown.

Nearly nine hours later the search continued and the girl's picture was broadcast on FOX23 news. Then the mother saw her daughter's picture and called police.

"To know that she is out here at 11 o'clock at night and nobody was with her I'm just praying the family is OK and maybe she just got out of the door or something," said Brown.

That's why police are investigating; detectives said the child was being babysat by a friend at her uncle's house. FOX23 tracked it and found it's just two blocks away from where the girl was found.

Detectives are putting together a timeline, questioning the uncle, his girlfriend, the babysitter, the mother and anyone in the uncle's home.

Although police say there are conflicting stories they do not believe there was negligence or abuse, they think the child simply wandered off.

Detectives told FOX23 this case is now being handled by DHS and the toddler is expected to be returned to her mother tonight.

FOX23 also learned the Tulsa Police Department and DHS took another child who lived at the uncle's house into protective custody.

coopstang - 12:05 AM 0 Votes Report User It said the uncle told the mom not to leave her child there with him, what kind of mother just leaves her baby in a home where they told her not to leave her? (if that's what was really said) and where was the mother from the time she drop off her baby until she saw her on the news? I mean she didn't even call to check on her daughter not once?
