JAMESLJOHNSON, you sound like a racist and a bigot. You are demanding "reparations"? Why should I hand you cash for something I didn't take part in, nor did you suffer from?

Babyface, you said there is a bad history of economic investments in North Tulsa? Why do you think that is? If I was going to put in a grocery store I sure wouldn't invest it in North Tulsa. The last time someone did that they were robbed over and over by the same people they were serving.

unwashed: you state that being involved with the KKK in 1921 "was the hip thing to do if you were one of the movers and shakers." The KKK was not about one who "wields power and influence." The KKK was a an organization that operated as a shadow government to spread hatred against Jews, Blacks, and other ethnics because of their belief in White Supremacy. They goal was to Murder black for no reason. They were a terrorist organization. Only someone who was a racist who had no problem with the idea of lynching innocent men, women and children, and stealing their belonging would become a member in the 20's. Marshal law was enacted in 1923 due to the KKK's violent acts against Black people in Tulsa and other areas of Oklahoma.

Unwashed, and ppiklapp: Tate Brady testified at a Military Tribunal in 1923 and admitted that at the time of the 1921 Race Riot he was a member of the KKK. The testimony is documented! It is a fact that Survivors of the Race Riot state they saw Burning Crosses on Standby Hill right before the Massacre started! Tate Brady was identified as being involved with Tarring and Feathering and whipping Wobblies (people who opposed WWI) Tate Brady was appointed to the Real Estate Commission right after the Riot and the city of Tulsa enacted ordinances making it impossible for the black victims to rebuild their homes or businesses on Greenwood. The greed was the alleged Land Grabbing following the race riot. In 1994 the State of Florida paid victims of the 1922 race riot reparations. It unfortunate many people in Oklahoma view Black Victims as the problem rather than the white supremacist who murdered and destroyed their homes and businesses. It was the Race Riot Commission that recommended Reparations in 2001! Even though a Reconciliation Area was approved in 2001 it was not until 2010 that Tulsa dedicated the John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park. I dare any commenter who claims the victims were greedy to state if their home were intentionally destroyed and family member murdered that they would never file a claim to rebuild their home or ask that charges be brought against the perpetrators. No one was charged in 1921 and it is clear there was a cover up. Victims of the Murray Bombing received reparations, and within a few years a Memorial was built and the perpetrators prosecuted.

Hey, babyface, you are right about the greed part, these people screaming to change street and district names are greedy, small minded people that had to dig deep to find something to bring down all the hard working people that live and work in Tulsa. They want their fifteen minutes plus everyone else's and they don't care that anybody who lives or works in the area has to say. I said it before, if they were serious on this issue, they would have been pushing to get the issue on the ballet. But like other extremists, they don't care about what anyone else wants or thinks, because everyone else is wrong for not giving them everything they want.

I am sick to death of these people trying to get their way. If they didn't like how the council settled the issue, then get a petition up and have it put on the ballot for the whole city to decide that changing the title of an entire area is wrong. Personally, I don't care that Mr. Brady was a racist, as a matter of fact, I didn't know it until someone got in my face as I was minding my own business. I say here what I said then, why is it an issue? The man is dead and there is no point in digging him up to punish him. He has already answered to his maker, and all the wringing of hands and crying oversized tears don't change anything. Nobody cared until all the businesses showed up, and most people don't want to change the street or district's name now.

The KKK was not involved in the Tulsa Race Riot, and Brady's alleged involvement in the Klan was believed to have taken place years after the riot, when membership in secret societies was the hip thing to do if you were one of the movers and shakers.

Reconciliation requires acknowledging the historic and continuing impact of racial privilege as well as working with the “targets” of this power imbalance in order to effect reconciliation. Leaving the street named after the KKK member Brady does not acknowledge the impact and nightmare the victims experienced because of racial hatred and greed in 1921. There were other names that could have been chosen. There was no humility in the Council's decision to go against the majority of speakers who said this name represents a reminder of past crimes against a targeted race of people who founder was a KKK member. The Jews received reparations, streets are not named after Hitler in Europe. The interned Japanese of WWII received reparations. The victims of the 1921 massacre received nothing for their homes being burned down, livelihood destroyed, loved one murdered! The history of this crime was conveniently removed from history books for decades. The city of Tulsa has had 90 years to reconcile the crimes of the 1921 Massacre. The lines of Brady District appear to be encroaching on that of Greenwood. Many feel Tulsa does not have a good history of economic development projects for North Tulsa. It is as if the city is suggesting the Black Survivors should be happy with any bone the city of Tulsa dishes out. The KKK still represents Hatred for different races. Brady was an admitted KKK member. The Arts District is still named after the KKK member. This story is not about slavery, it is about the 1921 Race Riot/Massacre. I am surprised at the number of racist comments concerning this tragedy.
