Punishments

Correcting behavior is often difficult in any animal but it is especially challenging with older pets who have already established many behavioral habits. If your older pet has done something wrong, do not yell or use violence. Instead, address the animal with eye contact and a stern, commanding voice, letting the pet know that the behavior is unacceptable. If the animal has done something wrong in your absence, it is too late for punishment and addressing the situation after the fact will only confuse the pet. Correcting behavior may take time, but proper punishment is important for your older pet's learning and welfare.
