Plugs are a common term for what the pros call electrical outlets, or receptacles. Each plug is like a branch on a tree, with the tree being the electrical circuit that runs from your service panel, to plugs throughout the house. Assuming your service can handle the load, additional outlets can be added where needed. This can come in handy, when you want to use something like a lamp or tv in a different location. Switches work by controlling the flow of current in a particular circuit. The most common switch is the single-pole, your basic on-off switch. Then there's the three-way switch, which lets you operate the same light from two different locations, say at either end of a hall. Dimmer switches allow you to control the intensity of lighting, from high to low. Changing out a switch is one of the easiest electrical tasks. With a little guidance, many people can do it themselves. For more information about updating or repairing switches and plugs in your home, visit your library, or speak with an electrical contractor.
