The condition known as Meniere's (MANE-EE-AIRZ) disease was first described in 1861, but even today the cause is not known. It's a disorder that affects the inner ear, and can disrupt both hearing and balance. Symptoms include attacks of vertigo, dizziness, nausea, hearing loss, and tinnitus (TIN-IT-US), or ringing in the ear. It may begin in one ear and spread to the other. While there's no absolute cure, an ear, nose and throat specialist may develop a treatment program to alleviate the pain and decrease the frequency or severity of the attacks. If you or a loved one have symptoms of Meniere's disease, see a specialist to try and control the condition.
