It's important to choose an exercise program that you enjoy as well as one that's suited to your fitness level; otherwise, you may find it difficult to stick with your routine. You may even want to select a variety of activities and alternate them on different days so you don't become bored. Before starting a fitness program, it's a good idea to get a basic check-up from a doctor, especially if you're out of shape, elderly, or have health problems. A doctor can help recommend activities that are appropriate for you. An exercise program can be as simple as walking around your neighborhood or local mall several days a week. Some people may enjoy solitary activities like hiking, running, in-line skating, or bicycling where they can relax by themselves. Others may prefer to work out with a friend while playing golf, tennis, or basketball. Group fitness classes are another option. Such classes might include aerobics, cardio kickboxing, and step aerobics where participants perform certain moves to music. When selecting a fitness program, those with arthritis or joint problems may prefer what are called low-impact exercises. Low-impact activities are less jarring to the body and include walking, swimming, and cycling.
