An exhaust system leak will interfere with your car's performance and economy and could even expose you to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Many facilities offer free inspections of the exhaust system. They can identify minor repairs to hangers or gaskets, or make minor welds, to forestall larger repairs. Or, you can perform a quick inspection of your tailpipe and muffler. When the car is cold, kneel behind it and gently shake the tailpipe. It should be firmly connected to the muffler and free of cracks, rust and leaks. It should be round, with no obstructions or dents. The muffler should be secure and free from rust. Your catalytic converter should be professionally inspected once a year. When replacing a muffler or catalytic converter, make sure the replacement part is recommended for your model and year. 'Bargain basement' parts sometimes lead to problems.
