Your automobile air filter operates like any home furnace filter. It collects excess dust, dirt, and other airborne particles before they can reach the internal portions of your car's engine. It's important that the air your car breathes is free of contaminants to ensure the long-life and smooth running of your vehicle. If airflow to the engine is interrupted, the car may run rough, or not run at all. Be sure to replace the air filter every six months or so. The best time to replace your car's air filter is at every other oil change. On older-model cars, replacement of the air filter is the simple removal of a wing nut, a cover plate, and the old filter. On newer models, air filters are often no longer easily located, or easily replaced. It may take a trained mechanic to properly install a new filter.
