Most cars made after 1975 are equipped with devices designed to reduce the release of harmful gases into the air from exhaust emissions. The catalytic converter is the main component on your car that helps control pollutants from being released into the atmosphere. This device helps provide control of several potentially harmful substances such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and oxides of nitrogen. It works by chemically converting the gases into harmless substances by exposing them to high heat and a chemical reactant. The catalytic converter is usually located somewhere on your car's exhaust pipe. Most states now require your car to pass an emissions test before it can be licensed for legal operation. That's why it's important to make sure your entire emissions system, especially the catalytic converter, is performing the way it should. Contact your local mechanic for more information on catalytic converters or to ask about having your emissions system checked.
