Fox 23 Grill Investigation Draws Nat'l Media

A Fox23 Solving Problems investigation into gas grill fires has caught the attention of national media.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of 24,000 perfect flame grills, just last week.

Now, Consumer Reports is looking into it.

Fox 23 Solving Problems reporter, Emily Sinovic has been investigating this story for weeks.

She has an update.

After watching my investigation online, a writer for the Consumer Reports website called and told me that Consumer Reports now wants to investigate the perfect flame grills.

But why now, after the recall?

It's the same reason I'm continuing to investigate. There are other models of the perfect flame grill, models not included in the recall, that are also catching fire.

I just confirmed another grill fire today.

The CPSC recalled the perfect flame gas grill, with the model number: GAC3615. That specific model is only one of many perfect flame grill models.

Last week, I showed you pictures I've received from all over the country. They show perfect flame grills that caught fire, but these are different models of the perfect flame grill. The grills in the pictures were not recalled.

Many of them have the perfect flame model number SLG2006 or SLG2007.

Melissa Shepard told me about her SLG2006 catching fire. She said, “The whole thing was engulfed in flames.”

Since then, I’ve heard from another grill owner in Michigan who owned the exact same grill as Shepard.

He wrote: "My perfect flame grill caught fire last week. I believe it was the cracked and rusted tubes that were the problem and source of the fire... the chicken I was cooking didn't catch fire... it was the inside of the grill itself."

That description matches pictures sent to me from a grill owner in New York. He sent pictures that show what look like "cracked tubes". They are actually the burners from the same model grill, but his grill was the updated SLG2007 model. In an email, the New York grill owner wrote,

"I am writing this in hopes Fox will continue its investigation...I experienced the same type of fire...
Further inspection showed that the stainless steel burners were corroded and one was broken...while [the manufacturer] advertises the burners as stainless steel, I believe they are actually polished steel."
