Did you know a typical margarita has 400 calories? That's as many calories as an entire cheeseburger Happy Meal! A lot of people have sworn off the calorific cocktails for the New Year to keep up with their new diet resolution. Garrett Blackwood of Blue Label Bartending School helps you keep your New Year’s weight loss resolution with delicious and fun skinny cocktails! "A typical margarita has 400 calories, while a Long Island Tea and piña colada are close to 500 calories," Blackwood said. "And these are empty calories with no nutritional value. I will be teaching two versions of a skinny margarita so that you can keep good health while still having a good time," he said.

Blackwood creates a skinny version of the class Margarita using Agave Nectar instead of the premade mix. "Easy to make with simple ingredients, and only 170 calories instead of the 400 plus found in a regular margarita," Blackwood said. "The second drink is what happens when a skinny margarita meets a skinny mojito – the 175 calorie Cucumber-Citrus Skinny Margarita," he said.

Blackwood created a guideline for calories in alcohol:

Beer (12 oz)
Average light lager beer (Bud Light) = 105 calories
Average regular lager beer (Budweiser) = 150 calories
Average ale (Pale Ale) = 175 calories
Beers average about 10 to 12 carbs per glass

Wine (6 oz)
Average red wine = 140 calories
Average white wine = 125 calories
Average sweet / dessert wine = 180 calories
Wine average about 2 carbs per glass

Mixed Drinks (1-1/4 oz)
Higher proof means higher calories. 1 oz of straight alcohol is about 90 calories.
Margarita = 400 calories
Gin & Tonic = 200 calories
Cape Cod = 250 calories
Vodka & Soda = 100 calories
