5 things to do to start over after you have been laid off
1.
Update your social media profile and beginning using it to find your next job.Go on your linked in account and let all of your contacts know you are in the job market. The key when starting over is to begin networking quickly. If you don’t have a linked in profile, create one and begin inviting people to join your network.
2.
Update your resume.Chances are you have not updated your resume in awhile. It is important to make sure your resume is fresh and relevant. Once you have a resume created share it with 5 close friends (outside of your family) and ask them to review it and tell you what they think you will be good at. This is a great way to see how a perfect stranger will interpret your resume.
3.
Join a support group for employees in transition or ask your employer if they will be providing any help with outplacement services.
Many churches and universities have job transition support groups. First United Methodist and Career Transitions (University of Phoenix) are 2 local organizations.
4.
Become an Entrepreneur out of Necessity With this economy many people are starting their own businesses as opposed to entering the job search market. If you have had an idea but never had the time to launch it perhaps this is the time. There are many non-profits that will help you create a business plan and mentor you throughout the process- SCORE, FAB Lab and Tulsa Entrepreneurial Spirit Award to name a few.
5.
Find out what you like and don’t like through volunteerism Yes you need a paycheck but volunteering your time and skills will help you avoid getting too depressed and also a great way to see what you like/don’t like, what you are great/not so great at and network.
