Classic Cocktails Concocted

The classic cocktails have taken off in bars in recent years from the Manhattan to a James Bond favorite the Vesper. These more complex cocktails are turning bartenders into mixologists, and the new bar in the Brady District called Valkrye is on board. "Our cocktails are made from quality spirits and fresh ingredients, by hand and with love," owner Tony said.  Mixologist Kevin Nadeau shares his recipe for the Improved Whiskey Cocktail and The Apropos.

The Improved Whiskey Cocktail:
2 oz. Rye Whiskey
.75 oz Dubbonet
.25 oz. Luxardo
3 dashes of Angostura
.25 oz Absinthe (for rinse in glass)
Stir all ingredients (except absinthe) with ice for 30 seconds. Swirl or spritz absinthe in a old fashioned glass. Add a few cubes of fresh ice and strain stirred ingredients into glass.

The Apropos:
1.5 oz London Dry Gin
1 oz. Aperol
.25 oz. Yellow Chartreuse
.5 oz. Lime Juice
Fill a cocktail glass with ice to chill. Shake all ingredients with ice for 25 seconds. Remove ice from glass. Double strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with a twist of orange.

Valkryie is opening every day from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m in the heart of the Brady District.
