In 2008 210,203 women in the United States were diagnosed with breast cancer. Dr. Elizabeth Macedo, St. John Breast Center suggests asymptomatic women to start getting an annual mammogram at age 40. "Some organizations state 50 is the age, but most organizations stuck with 40," she said. If a person does have a lump or abnormal mammoagram, they will then get an ultrasound or MRI. "MRI available for screening high risk woman and those diagnosed with breast cancer for preoperative planning; also good for women with very dense breasts" Macedo said. A person is considered at high risk if there is a first degree relative (parents, sister) and premenopausal diagnosis of breast cancer. You are also at a higher risk for those that are BRCA 1&2 gene mutation carriers or have ovarian cancer." Also those with previous radiation therapy of Hodgkin's disease.
