Aren’t vitamins good for you?
Vitamins are good for you……..in the right quantity. Think about vitamins just like you would think about water. We hear from reliable medical studies that people need more water. It improves your kidney function and your metabolic rate and is much better for you than pop and sodas. But we all know that if you get too much water…..it is called drowning. So in a sense water can be good and bad, depending on how much and under what circumstance.
Vitamins are the same. Every mother knows how important vitamins are to a growing child. Vitamins help the child to develop normally inside the womb and during childhood. Every woman knows how important it is for them to have good nutrition and take vitamins before and during pregnancy and those child bearing years. Women without adequate vitamins, especially folic acid, have a higher chance of their child have permanent brain and spine deformities. How long have doctors known that vitamins are dangerous?
We known that for several decades that some vitamins increased a person’s risks for serious health problems. For instance a study done over 25 years ago was done to look at ways to decrease cancer risk in smokers. The idea was that if we gave lots of vitamins and supplements, they would lower the risk of cancer, but we found the exact opposite to be true. A study called the Iowa Women’s Health Study, found that the absolute risk of increased death in women age 55 to 69 was 2.4% and depending upon which vitamin or mineral, it could increase up to 18% higher that the non-vitamin user.Question # 5
What are the most dangerous vitamins according to the study?
Iron, Magnesium, Zinc and Copper were the most serious. But folic acid and vitamin B6 also increased the death rate by 3-6%. Interestingly the most physically active, higher educational level patients were the ones who took more vitamins and supplements and had a higher death rate.About:
